Thank you for nominating me as the next president of NUAA.

I have to express my deep appreciation to all previous and current NUAA board members for their outstanding service to all of us. We often take it for granted. However, without their yearafter-year sacrifice, it is impossible for us to see what has been done, including this election.  To me, this is nothing less than the remarkable.

Since last September I have been approached by several groups of people and was asked if I would like to be considered the next president of NUAA. My initial reaction was they approached a wrong candidate, not only because my time constraint may hinder the commitment this duty requires, but more important, there are many talented people who are better qualified for the position. So I guess they just approached a handily available person with least search effort.

When Prof. Gao Peng, general secretary of Nanda Alumni Association, told me that the average amount of fundraising from US Nanda alumni is about 10 thousand dollars a year, I thought it is a fact that we all should take it seriously. A first-level university is unthinkable without a strong support from its first-level alumni. In fact, we have so many alumni who not only want to contribute to the growth of our Alma Mater, they also want to be benefited from strong ties to the extended Nanda family. After all, I am sure you agree with me that this is a call for all of us.

As a candidate of the next president of NUAA, I would like to share with you my view of how to transform our alumni association to the next level to meet the expectations of Nanjing University and her alumni in America.

First and foremost, NUAA will strive to offer various services to our alumni. The ultimate reason for NUAA to exist is about service. Our services include: (i) providing information about alumni's professional achievements, career opportunities, family lives, education, latest development of Nanda, and others that are interesting to the alumni; (ii) organizing social events to promote alumni's contacts and increase awareness of the association to our alumni. To help achieving these goals, NUAA will launch a website accessible to all Nanda alumni and keep the website current.

Second, NUAA will help our alumni pursue their professional development and utilize their expertise beyond this country. The rapid growth of China's economy, science, and education has attracted many overseas Chinese with unprecedented opportunities. Over the last few years, many alumni have put tremendous effort to establish professional connections with universities, corporations, and organizations in China. This is by no means of easy attempts. NUAA will work closely with Nanda and other organizations to build up a platform for our alumni to explore various channels in this endeavor. Possible activities that NUAA can be involved include organizing lectures and seminars, developing academic and business cooperation, and promoting consulting services in China that our alumni will take part.

Third, in the subject of fundraising, NUAA will work with NUFF (US) to significantly lift the fundraising level to help Nanda and her students. Over the years, board members of NUAA and NUFF have put incredible amount of time in this regard. They have worked tirelessly and very professionally to ensure every dollar donated by our alumni to be used appropriately. It is time to get more alumni involved and develop more effective approaches for fundraising. Although these seem to be simple answers, they are not easy ones. I must mention that a recent fundraising campaign by Cheng Hong, Zhou Fang, He Mei, Wen Jing and Zhu Zhiqing to establish Professor Sun Jingli's scholarship is laudable. Within a short period of time, they raised over 9000 dollars. It won't surprise all of us that with such strong and collective efforts, the current level of fundraising becomes multifold before long.

Needless to say, we cannot achieve these goals without hard work and support of NUAA board members. I am sure our board members, from the time they elected to serve our alumni, are well prepared to contribute, sacrifice, and accomplish. Working with a group of such caliber is a privilege, personal satisfaction, and fun.

We all are proud of being Nanda alumni. In the meantime, we should also be a glorious class that Nanda is proud of. It is no more than a responsibility that NUAA plays a leading role in empowering alumni's influence in Nanda's future. Let's work together to make NUAA one the finest alumni communities among all universities in China. It is a dream, but nothing happens unless first a dream, worthy of this board and worth of passing on to the next. To this destination, we begin with things necessary; then we try something possible. All of a sudden, I believe, we will find ourselves doing the impossible.
